Today we’re talking about How to Make Money with Online Affiliate Marketing and Blogging. It’s really not as difficult as some folks would have you believe. In fact, it’s perhaps one of the easiest ways for beginners to earn income online these days.
One of the best things about affiliate marketing and blogging is that you can start for such a low cost, it’s not even funny.
But one of the pains is you have to have a lot of patience before you really get rolling and making decent profits.
In a regular “9 to 5 job” you can start working on the first day and get paid a couple of weeks or a month later for the amount of hours you put in.
But with affiliate marketing, or any online business model, you’re basically going to be working for free until momentum is built up and the pennies and dollars start dropping into your bank account.
So, with that info out of the way, let’s discuss a few important details you need to know before you embark on this exciting journey as an entrepreneur. (Yes, affiliate marketers and bloggers are indeed entrepreneurs!).
What is Affiliate Marketing?
If you’ve never heard the term before, it might sound a little bit daunting. I know that I used to think it was something really complex. I wasn’t sure exactly what it was for a long time and I never bothered to look it up, so to speak.
However, I finally discovered it’s nothing more than recommending products or services to people on behalf of a company…(just like Amazon.com).
We’ve all heard of Amazon and we all know what that’s about. It’s an online market place where you can buy just about anything you want.

What is Blogging?
Blogging is the “art” of writing content and publishing it on the internet. It stands for “WEB LOG”. Simply take the letter B from the end of the word “Web” and attach it to the word “log” and you have the word BLOG. It’s basically like an online diary that’s not private.
As a sidenote, the written word is not the only type of “blog” you could have. You could do Vlogging, which is basically the video version without written words.
And then there’s also Podcasting, which is audio with no video. Basically, the purpose of a blog, vlog, or podcast is to create content that people want to consume and they’ll likely come to your website to consume it.
Niche Down When You Start a Blog
Now, when you start a blog using the right methods, you can earn money. And you earn money by using the affiliate marketing method.
You can’t just start a website and blog on it about random topics. That’s too disorganized and won’t generate much traffic as a result. (Traffic is visitors on your website reading your blog).
You have to “niche” down. This means you have to create a blog around a certain topic. This topic, typically should be something you’re passionate about. For you it might be football and for someone else it might be fishing.
There are gazillions of niches you could choose from. And in every niche there are inevitably a gazillion products you can “sell” by recommending them on your blogging website.
You just need to join an affiliate program so that you can get hold of a special “affiliate link”.
What is an Affiliate Program?
An affiliate program is something you join (often takes just a minute or two to apply) so that you can be a “partner” with a company.
Let’s keep using Amazon.com as the example to keep things simple, but keep in mind you will find thousands, if not millions of affiliate programs online these days.
Affiliate marketing is a MASSIVE industry and it’s only going to grow as more and more people spend money online.
If you navigated to Amazon and you’re looking at the home page, scroll down to the bottom and you’ll see something like this.
If you don’t have a website already in place with some content on it, there’s no point in applying for an Amazon affiliate account just yet.
Amazon will want to see content on a website that you own first. Another thing about Amazon is that if you don’t make any sales in your first 6 months as an affiliate, you will lose your affiliate account.
But don’t worry, all you do is apply to be an affiliate again and start fresh. They don’t put a “ban” on you for losing your account. I think they’re just keeping a tight ship.
Affiliate Marketing Examples
I’m a blogger and I’m an affiliate marketer. My blog is in the “make money online” niche. I teach people how to blog for profits.
There are various things I cover, such as…
- Keyword Research
- Themes for WordPress
- WordPress Plugins
- List Building
- Email Marketing
- Affiliate Tools & Resources
- Recommended Training
- Social Media Marketing
It’s my “job” to help people to do the things above.
Affiliate marketing is something I’m very interested in and that’s why I started this website you’re on now. It’s my “niche”.
I’m passionate about this niche so I’m happy to create content in this niche.
As a result of me being in the niche I’ve chosen, there’s not too much on Amazon that I’d want to sell. Perhaps some Kindle books about online marketing. But here’s the thing…
Like I mentioned before, there are thousands upon thousands of affiliate programs. It’s not limited to Amazon.
There are affiliate programs for almost any niche you can imagine.
There’s a website called Clickbank.com and you will find many niches and products there. This website is as far as I know, all digital products.
You’ll find many niches and products at Clickbank
How Fast Can You Make Money with Affiliate Marketing?
The caveat with affiliate marketing is that it will take time and patience and a determination in your blogging to get where you want to be in terms of income.
You have to accept the fact that it’s going to be a while before the money starts piling up. There’s no set time.
It might take months before you make some money. The thing you have to do is just have faith that you’ll get more and more visitors reading your blog posts with the passage of time. In the beginning nobody knows you exist.
You must continue adding to your blog as frequently as possible.
But don’t let the fact that it will take time to earn money put you off trying this awesome business model for yourself. It is the best way to earn online for many reasons.
There are huge benefits to affiliate marketing.
The Benefits of Affiliate Marketing for the Affiliate
Let’s take a look at some of the many huge benefits of affiliate marketing.
- You do not need to stock any products
- Some affiliate programs pay recurring commissions
- You don’t have to work set hours
- Affiliate Marketing isn’t going anywhere, in fact it’s growing fast
- You can work from home or anywhere with an internet connection
- Once you learn the ropes, it’s good fun!
- You can earn commissions from 5% to 100%
- Most affiliate programs are fast and easy to join (sometimes minutes)
- You get to build a business around your passions
- Super low startup costs compared to traditional businesses
- You don’t have to handle customer support queries, refunds, etc
- The only tools you need are an internet connected laptop/desktop PC
What NOT to Do When You Start Affiliate Marketing & Blogging
So many people try to choose a niche that is too broad. This way, they end up having to compete in the marketplace with massive companies who’ve been in the industry.
If you chose a niche of just “sports” then you’d have a really hard time ranking in the search engines for anything you write. You’re competing directly with the likes of Nike, Adidas, Reebok and a plethora of other huge brands.
You have to niche down. Take a sub topic of the niche and focus on it.
Another mistake I often see is people not creating enough content and still expecting incredible results.
Person A: “Why haven’t I made any money yet?”ME: How long have you been at it?Person A: “3 weeks!”ME: How many blog posts have you got published on your website?Person A: “Two posts!”
Can you see the problem there?
Far too often, people will expect millions of dollars handed to them on a silver plate for practically zero work done.
They say affiliate marketing doesn’t work and they’re quitting.
Well if you ask me, there’s only one guaranteed way of failing, and that is to quit.
People who expect everything handed to them on a silver plate are living in cloud cuckoo land and they’re not cut out for entrepreneurship. It’s best they stick to the 9-5 job if you ask me.
Do not focus your energy on making money. Your primary focus should be on helping people.
You have to help people to solve problems, to fix things they have trouble with, to show them how to do something or how something works.
“You can get everything in life you want if you will just help enough other people get what they want.” ~ Zig Ziglar
